Secondly, many thanks to all the volunteers, referees, our sponsor Oliver Sports Canada, and the provincial squash leadership teams from the Atlantic Region who all contributed to making this a successful event.

Also many thanks to Thomas Hori and Barb Cooper who conducted evaluations of Referees and Coaches respectively to help advance referees and coaches in their journeys. Congratulations to all of the coaches and officials who completed assessments! Also thanks to Squash Canada, Squash NS, Squash NB, Squash PEI and Squash NL who worked together to support the coaches in their qualification upgrades!

It was especially nice to see the 43 juniors, particularly the 30 U15s who participated in the tournament. It bodes well for the future of our sport to see so many youngsters competing. Good luck to you all in the future. Hoping to see some of you play for your respective provinces in the Canada Games coming in early 2023 in Charlottetown.

And finally, thanks to everyone who entered and competed for supporting the event, with special thanks to those entrants who traveled long distances to participate. We hope that you had safe journeys home!

HSL Update

After 10 weeks of Play HSL Session one is all wrapped up.

For the stats nerds here a few results

Undefeated Team Smash Bros (8-0)

Undefeated Players Mike Howard 7-0, Tim Manette 6-0, Jim Kennedy 6-0, Mike Cook 5-0 and Manny Drapeau 4-0

Most Active Player Rankings Lee Kirby 6-2, Mike Howard 7-0, Aran Brady 6-1, Abdo 5-2, Leanne Huck 5-2, Dave Thomson 5-2.

Tiebreaks

Both Div 1 and 2 went to tiebreaks for Second and Third places. In Div 1 CHP won over The Destroyers by winning more matches (17 vs 16) and in Div 2 Dal 3 edged out Dal 3 with the third tiebreak (Games won 62 vice 61).

Promotion and relegation.

SMU 4, the Div 2 winner is promoted to Div 1 and Dal 1 as the low team in Div 1 is relegated to Div 2.  As we are looking to recruit at least two more teams to run 3 divisions of 4. The Convenors will look at how to divide up the teams into three divisions in a way that makes sense and will work to keep the divisions balanced and respect the session one promotion/relegations.  Although the intent is to retain the same teams by and large, there will be a few adjustments made due to changes in ratings over the fall session.

New player intake for Session two is open (HSL Registration page on Club Locker) until Dec 30th.

If you registered as a full time player for session 1, you are already registered and do not need to do anything.  If you registered as a part time player (spare), you can switch to full time by paying the difference between the entry fees for FT players and PT players.

The new session starts on Jan 5th

We hope to run at least two more sessions before closing up shop for the season and may consider running a summer league if anyone is interested.

Many thanks to our unofficial sponsor the Foggy Goggle! And to my co-Convenors Chis Lien, Jason Barnes and Dave Malyk and to all of the players.

Happy Squashing and see you all at the Goggle next Wednesday!

Phil Jourdeuil, HSL Convenor

Membership Update Post COVID

Hi Just a quick note to let everyone know what is going on with memberships post COVID.

As you may know last year the board decided to extend memberships first by six months and then for another six months. Essentially anyone with an active membership purchased before 1 April 2020 was extended for a year. The way the  Club Locker and Stripe APIs interacted to implement these changes created a huge mixup in membership expiry dates and account credits.

We also decided not to start collecting memberships until Aug 2021.

At the AGM in June 2021 we changed the fee structure by reducing the number of membership types and reducing fees going forward. This requires us to stop the auto renew on accounts so that people see the new fees as opposed to the old ones.

No one has had to pay membership fees for the last 16 months even though we still provided services such as player insurance coverage while the courts were open and other activities.

To implement all of these changes we have decided to do the following balancing fairness and keeping to the intent of the year long extension.

Tonight we are taking the following actions:

  1. All subscriptions on the old membership plans will have the auto-renew turned off
    • Any of those subscriptions with an expiry date on or before 31 March 2022 will expire on their current expiry dates. (Reflecting a full year extension).
    • Any of those subscriptions with an expiry date on or after 1 April 2022 will expire now, These are memberships that were set to renew between 1 Apr 2021 and now where the invoice was not sent and the membership renewed anyway because we paused collection of memberships.
  2. All credits erroneously applied to accounts as part of the covid extensions will be zeroed
  3. All memberships bought between 6 Aug 2022 and today, which were billed under the old prices and which had credits applied will be refunded and the expiry dates of those memberships will reflect the auto-renew date.

This will take place overnight and early into tomorrow morning.

Many thanks for your patience,

On behalf of the board,

Phil Jourdeuil,

Treasurer Continue reading “Membership Update Post COVID”

Congratulations to our new leadership!

On behalf of the Board and the members of Squash NS I would like to congratulate:

Dave Thomson on his assumption of the role of President of Squash NS

Marwan Abouelela on his assumption of the role of Vice President and

John MacPhail on his acclamation as a member at large.

Phil Jourdeuil on his assumption of the role of Treasurer and

Cameron Reid and Evan McNichol on their return as members at large for another two year term.

Dave and Marwan agreed to co-lead the Board after the call for volunteers and the AGM produced no candidates.  They and the Board will continue to lead the sport in its recovery post covid and will be refreshing the strategic plan for Squash NS in 2021-22.

In other news the AGM approved a restructure of membership classes and fees that eliminated the recreational class of membership and reduced membership fees. Details are here.

We are also actively planning the 2021-22 Competitive season.  We plan to restart the HSL in September and expect that Premier League will also start in the fall. I would would ask clubs/individuals who are planning tournaments to indicate their interest and tentative dates to Mallory. So far we have no news on tourney dates in the other provinces but for NS we have tentative bookings for the:

    • Cole Harbour Team Tourney – 14-17 Oct
    • NS Jr Open – 19-21 Nov
    • Dal tournament planned for 13-16 Jan
    • NS Open 24-27 Mar

Also we would like to start a four tournament Junior Circuit for new, improving and competitive juniors. With tourney dates in Sep, Oct, Jan and Feb and each held at a different club in the province.  Details of the circuit can be found here.  Again Clubs should indicate their interest to Mallory.

I would like to thank the board and the squash community for your support over the last three years and hope you will work as hard to support our new leadership going forward.

Signing off,

Phil
