Please consider joining the board!

Squash NS is looking for volunteers to join the Board of Directors. We are looking for a Director of Competitive Programs, A Director of Developmental Programs, a Director of Communications and Advocacy, a Director of Membership and Volunteer Development and four Directors at Large. The organization of the board, its operation and the duties of and eligibility criteria for the various positions can be found at https://nssquash.ca/board-activity/board-orientation/(opens in a new tab).

To join the board, please send an email identifying which position you are applying for, a short summary of what you bring to the board and how you meet the eligibility criteria to mtaylor@sportnovascotia.ca by 4pm Monday June 3rd.

Your candidacy will be presented to the membership at the AGM. Positions with more than one applicant, will proceed to election, after candidates are given the opportunity to address the membership.

Squash NS Recent Results

The last month saw a number of national and regional championships take place in which Nova Scotia was ably represented. First the Canadian Junior Championships on the weekend of April 11-14 in Edmonton; then the Atlantics in Moncton on the weekend of the 24-28 of April and finally the Canadian Championships from 30 April – 3 May in Toronto. NS players achieved excellent results in all three tournaments. Click on the links above for the detailed draws and results. Top performers are highlighted below.

Congratulations to Douglas Kosciukiewicz for a 10th place finish at the Canadian Junior Championships on the weekend of April 11-14. With this result Douglas finishes his season as No. 9 in the country in U19 Category. and as the No 1 male in the province of NS in all age categories! Well done Doug!

Follow the Action at the Canadian Squash Championships

Follow Nova Scotians Matt Bishop (M35+), Leah Boody and Niamh Campbell (WA) and Phil Anderson (MA) as they join a star-studded field of Canada’s best players are set to take center-stage this week (April 30 to May 4) at the Mayfair Lakeshore Racquet Club for the 2019 Canadian Squash Championship.  They join over 250 athletes ranging from our high-performance athletes in the Open divisions to our veteran squash players in master’s age divisions.

The Women’s Open field will highlight eight of Canada’s elite female squash players looking for National Glory.  The draw features 2018 Champion Danielle Letourneau of Calgary, Alberta who hopes to join elite company as a back-to-back Canadian Champion.  In her way are former Champions Hollie Naughton (2016, 2017) of Mississauga, Ontario and Samantha Cornett (2013, 2014, 2015) of Ottawa, Ontario.  These women along with a strong contingent of challengers will give their all in an effort to be crowned Canadian Women’s Champion.

On the Men’s Open side, 16 of Canada’s elite male players will battle for a chance to become Canadian Champion.  The draw features two-time and reigning Canadian Champion Andrew Schnell Calgary, Alberta who looks to win a third National Title.  Standing in his way are former winners Nicholas Sachvie (2017) and Shawn Delierre (2013, 2015) as well as a host of others that include National Team Squad members David Baillargeon, Mike McCue and Cameron Seth.  The deep and talented men’s field will leave everything on the court in their efforts to be crowned Canadian Men’s Champion.

In addition crowning Canadian champions, the 2019 Canadian Squash Championships are the last opportunity for our very best athletes to be selected for the final spots on the Canadian Women’s and Men’s Team going to Lima, Peru, for the 2019 Pan-Am Games in 3 months time, where we hope to repeat Canada’s spectacular 2015 Team Gold Medal performance in Toronto.

Finally, 225 players have come to Toronto to compete in various Masters and Companion categories in chase of a dream to be called a Canadian Squash Champion.  Categories range from Women’s A, B, C, 50+ and 60+ to Men’s A, B, C, D, 30+, 35+, 45+, 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+ and 75+.  And for those that come away victorious they will join an illustrious group of squash players to be crowned Canadian Champions.

With the renewal of the Sport NS PSO Coordinator MOUs there have been some changes in personnel assignments.

It is therefore my sad duty to say goodbye to Graham Young our Sport NS PSO Coordinator for the last two years.  Graham has been a valuable member of the Squash NS team, bringing a wealth of knowledge and support to the members of the Board and to the Squash Community in general. On behalf of the squash community and the Board of Squash NS I would like to express our thanks for all of his support and wish him the best of luck in his new assignments

I would also like to welcome Mallory Taylor to the fold.  Mallory is taking over as our PSO Coordinator and we look forward to working with her in the coming years.

Having trouble with membership upgrades?

We are currently experiencing a problem with viewing the membership options on the membership site.  You cannot scroll on the options selection page.

Here is a work around

To upgrade your membership go to https://novascotia.clublocker.com/login 
login to your account and in the navigation bar under the Squash NS, you will see Membership on the right. Click on that. If you cannot see Adult Competitive, select the junior radio button, and then click on the down arrow on your keyboard 
  • once will get you to Adult recreational
  • twice will get you to child competitive
  • three times will get you to junior competitive
  • four times will get you to adult competitive
  • and then click on the 2 under upgrade membership. That should work.

The problem has been reported and Club Locker is working to fix it.

Management and Screening of Squash Coaches

Squash Nova Scotia needs to introduce some changes to how coaches are managed, screened and tracked because of federal regulatory changes resulting from an investigation by CBC into abuse in sport https://www.cbc.ca/sports/federal-sport-minister-new-steps-eliminate-abuse-sport-1.5026911.

Among other things, Squash NS will implement the responsible coaching movement guidelines in the coming months.  To this end we will be looking to meet with active coaches to discuss the way ahead in the next month or so. More to follow as we know it.

Although Registration is closed, Late registration remains open until Monday March 25th at noon ADT. The tournament takes  place between 28-31 March 2019 at SMUFit.  To register go to https://novascotia.clublocker.com/login and log in to your account, click on the tournaments tab and select the Nova Scotia Open, and click sign up.  Remember that to register you need to be a competitive member of Squash NS, which you can purchase from the sign up page.  If you are from out of province, and are asked for membership, please select the no-fee Competitive- Out of province option and then complete your registration.  People interested in sponsoring the tournament can do so from the sign-up page.

People interested in improving their referee credentials can do so at the tournament. Please contact us to get included.
