What is 902SquashEd?Â
902SquashEd is a Registered Non-Profit Society that inspires and empowers students from racialized backgrounds. It is located at the Kings County Squash Club, in Kentville, and has been operating since 2022. 902SquashEd’s mission, is to combine traditional squash training with essential leadership development and academic support. The program creates a dynamic environment where racialized youth can thrive both in the sport and in their personal lives The program empowers youth to feel engaged and inspired to achieve great things. Currently, 902SquashEd is partnered with the Afrocentric cohort at Horton High School, but plan to expand to more schools and communities.Â
Why is the 902SquashEd Program essential?Â
902SquashEd offers a welcoming space for youth to engage in squash, fostering not only diversity in the sport but also self-development, fitness, and lasting friendships. Remaining physically active in a safe environment is a strong tool for education and personal growth and will have a lasting impact on our lives. 902SquashEd encourages their students to set high goals and achieve their full potential. They take pride in encouraging their students to give back to their communities; many of them actively serve on our board, creating a positive impact. At 902SquashEd, they firmly believe that squash is more than just a game; it is a pathway to success! Their unique combination of squash training, academic guidance, and mentorship equips students with the skills and confidence needed to excel in all areas of life. Every spring, in the month of May, 902SquashEd hosts the Tournament for Education. All funds raised go directly to scholarships for graduating players to support their post-secondary education. It’s a great way to celebrate their achievements and help them pursue their dreams! But once players graduate, that’s not the end; They still encourage them to remain in the sport and return to practices with the rest of the team. You’ll find that 902SquashEd has become like a family and second home for many of the students who are currently involved, as well as those who have previously participated.Â
